Presently, transmission system operators are tackling challenging dynamic issues in scenarios close to real-time utilizing their dynamic stability assessment tools and data acquisition devices that have in operation. These devices use different types of technology and the majority of the tools used in the control centers are tailored to each of them.

Due to the large number of applications of wide area monitoring systems (WAMSs), many power utilities are implementing phasor measurement units (PMUs)-based WAMS replacing the conventional supervisory control and data acquisition system. The biggest challenge in implementing the technology is the cost of WAMS. Many researchers are trying to minimize the cost of WAMS by making the system observable with optimal placement of PMU.

This paper describes the performance of protective relays during wide-area stressed power system conditions. The work will not cover System Integrity Protection Schemes (SIPS).

This paper describes a detailed nonlinear electromagnetic model for predicting current in transformers commonly used to supply electrical power in rural arc welding applications. Current-limiting in these welders during quenched arcs is achieved using a gap-less core design, resulting in high-magnetizing impedance but also a significant degree of magnetic saturation. To accurately predict transformer currents during arc welding, the proposed model includes nonlinear magnetization effects.

The widespread use of power quality monitors has enabled utilities to extract non-power-quality information from the power quality measurements. A potential use of such data is equipment condition monitoring, as equipment failures present unique signatures in the voltage and current waveforms. In this context, this report was prepared to support the development and application of methods that use power quality data analytics for equipment condition monitoring.

The worldwide acceptance of plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) is expected to tremendously grow in the next few years. Uncoordinated PEV charging can cause serious grid issues such as overloading of transformers and unacceptable voltage drops. Single-phase residential charging can also initiate or contribute to voltage unbalance in distribution networks. A potential solution for the PEV integration is shifting the charging activities from peak to valley periods.

This report of TF on dynamic state and parameter estimation aims to 1) clearly review its motivations and definitions, demonstrate its values for enhanced power system modeling, monitoring, operation, control and protection as well as power engineering education; 2) provide recommendations to vendors, national labs, utilities and ISOs on the use of dynamic state estimator for enhancement of the reliability, security, and resiliency of electric power systems.

This publication, which has taken several years of preparation by a large number of international experts, is directed to researchers and practitioners who have a general interest or are actively working in the area of voltage stability assessment (VSA) of power systems. The document covers all aspects of VSA, from basic theoretical concepts and general industry and research practices, to a detailed description of some of the tools and software packages currently used for the study of VSA.
