Fundamentals Charles J. Mozina and Jonathan D. Gardell Abstract ? This introductory chapter of the tutorial provides basic background information to better understand the chapters that follow. It is intended to provide information for the less experienced engineer. This chapter describes the electrical workings and dynamics of synchronous generators and their connections to the power system. Generator performance under short-circuit conditions is also described, along with generator grounding practices. In addition, some of the most misunderstood aspects of generator protection are also addressed. Finally, the IEEE C37 guides that relate to generator protection are enumerated along with the definitions of relay device numbers.
