Hurricane Sandy devastated the U.S. Northeast and left millions without electricity for several days. Had microgrids, independent smaller power systems, been installed widely, the power restoration could be seamless for these systems. This webinar focuses on nanogrids, which are basic building blocks of microgrids. The presentation first describes the nanogrid concept, its key components and benefits of nanogrids. Potential markets that can benefit from nanogrids are provided afterwards. Two use cases were developed to address typical examples of nanogrids and show the potential value streams that can be obtained by a nanogrid with an emphasis on its critical energy storage component. Finally, potential gaps in technology capabilities and market barriers to nanogrid deployment are identified.
