Grid modernization activities are resulting in many trends that will affect power quality levels on electricity transmission and distribution systems. For example, inverter based resources will have many impacts, including the generation of higher frequency noise from switching. New measurement methods and analytical techniques will be necessary to meet these challenges.

Power systems globally are going through unprecedented changes, mainly driven by decarbonization targets, leading to increasing penetration of converter interfaced devices, both at transmission and distribution level. Converter interfaced devices have significantly different dynamic behaviour compared to synchronous generators and can lead to the appearance of new dynamic interactions.

States and territories across North America are enacting and enforcing an increasing number of policies to fight climate change, mandating utilities to replace fossil-fueled generation with renewable energy resources (RERs) to achieve grid decarbonization.

Global power systems are undergoing significant transformation with high penetration renewable energy resources and DERs. EVs, electrification of transportations, are reshaping the energy demand services patterns with potential new reliability and resilience support. At this panel, leaders in industry and academia will provide outlooks on the opportunities of new infrastructure development and market design. Evolution of Smart Grid technologies and its future trends will be reviewed.

This session is intended to recognize the best emerging academic work that falls under the scope and enhances the mission of the Power and Energy Society (https://www.ieee-pes.org/about-pes). Nominations will be solicited from recent Ph.D. (or equivalent) graduates that defended their dissertation within the last three calendar years at the time of the nomination deadline.

Transient stability (TS) simulation programs have been successfully used by power engineering community for over a half century. Full EMT simulation is becoming a necessary alternative solution when many power electronics apparatus are connected to power systems. The models of the power electronics equipment are well developed in EMT simulation programs. The challenge is the computation speed to deal with large systems.

It becomes important to understand the solver requirements in electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulations as larger system with more fidelity of individual component models are analyzed in EMT. In this session, the focus will be on different numerical simulation methods and parallelism techniques that have been applied to enhance the speed of EMT simulation of high-fidelity component models and large system analyzed in EMT.

The scope and scale of research projects are creating an increase in the collaborations between national research laboratories and universities. The speakers on this panel will share experiences with formal partnerships through institutes, joint appointments and large research projects between national research laboratories and universities as they leverage interactions to advance state-of-the-art power research together.
