In traditional power system, effective grounding on the feeder is provided by the substation transformer. In recent years, microgrids have started to gain more traction. The biggest challenge with the design of microgrid is the design of effective grounding, because once the microgrid disconnects from the grid, it loses its ground source. For that reason, a new grounding source, a grounding transformer, is required in order to maintain the stability of the microgrid and in order to ensure the compliance with existing standards. This webinar will cover the basic principles of system grounding, the impact of DER transformer configuration on feeder fault current levels, five reasons for the grounding transformer within the microgrid with inverter-based DERs, challenges with the design of grounding transformer using the existing standards and the behavior of the grounding transformer under the line to ground fault within the electric utility's microgrid.
