The integration of monitoring and control devices with communication networks and embedded computing enhances the operation capabilities of the power grid but make the system more vulnerable to cyberattacks. In addition, conventional IT security solutions have proven to be insufficient to protect cyber-physical power systems, where actions in the cyber components will have a significant impact in the power grid operation. For this reason, we propose novel security mechanisms using ML and control theory to exploit the unique properties from cyber-physical power systems to detect, locate, and classify cyberattacks while making the system more resilient.
