As the penetration of power electronics increases in the power grid, the power system planning needs to undergo a transformation. This transformation will include the need for new design and planning tools for power system planners like electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulation tools. As this transition to the use of EMT tools happens, it becomes important to understand the processes needed to perform such analysis, models needed to perform such analysis, validation methods to maintain model quality, perform scalable EMT analysis of systems, among others. In this panel session, these different attributes that need to be considered for use of EMT in planning will be discussed as system operators and utilities embrace the use of EMT simulations in planning.
