Our panel discussion, " Economic viability of long-duration energy storage systems", delves into the critical issue of assessing the economics of long-duration energy storage (LDES). The aggressive and necessary decarbonization of power systems in several countries is going to lead to energy matrices that will mostly rely on intermittent renewables and lack firm generation. Within these circumstances, LDES is a promising solution to guarantee that customers will continue to have energy when they need it. This panel brings together experts from different institutions with a diverse background to discuss the future needs of fully decarbonized power systems, how LDES can be instrumental in fulfilling these needs, and how much LDES should cost to be an economically viable solution.
