Grid decarbonization efforts have resulted in accelerated adoption of renewable energy resources by utilities worldwide as well as rapid electrification of end-use loads. Adoption of variable resources as well as new load components like electric vehicles have increased the uncertainty on both the resource and the demand side that planners must consider for investing in new infrastructure as well as capacity to ensure reliable system operation. For making optimal expansion plans around capacity, transmission and distribution infrastructure, integrated system planning with coordinate reliability assessment across generation (G), transmission (T) and distribution (D) is becoming indispensable. However, such integrated planning ensuring composite system reliability across G, T and D can be challenging and requires improvements to the present tools and analyses. The aim of this panel is to discuss challenges as well as new developments around composite system reliability to accelerate grid decarbonization efforts.
