The session will explore power quality issues - including both concerns and improvement opportunities - associated with grid modernization activities. Power quality phenomena include momentary outages, voltage sags and swell, volt flicker, rapid voltage variations, harmonics, and transient overvoltages. Grid modernization activities include large renewable energy power plants, distributed energy resources, application of STATCOM and FACTS devices, distribution management systems (including DERMS). Emphasis will be given to application case histories on utility transmission and distribution systems.
