This panel session will discuss design and planning aspects of HVDC overlay networks in high-renewables future. The discussion topics will include technical concepts, design principles and functional requirements of HVDC grid systems; staged developmen of national-level HVDC transmission networks; progress of meshed HVDC offshore transmission networks; HVDC transmission schemes combining the benefits of both LCC and VSC technologies; and system studies for planning HVDC overlay networks.
