In the past decade, hydropower plants have successfully balanced the variability of renewable generation, minimizing the impact on power system stability. Advanced Pumped Storage Hydropower (A-PSH) enables the integration of high penetration of renewables. The power electronics converter allows an instantaneous and independent control of real and reactive power at the grid interface. Thus, we can accomplish the frequency and voltage regulation simultaneously, ensuring the reliable operation of power systems. The power converter also optimizes the turbine-generator; therefore, various control objectives are programmable at the Machine Side Converter to ensure optimal turbine operations. This panel invites a variety of presenters representing utility, manufacturer, national laboratory, university, state, and federal agencies. We expect that the dialogs between the presenters and the audience generate new ideas, concepts, and collaborations among various engineering and business entities to ensure a successful implementation of A-PSH in many years to come.
