FERC Order 2222, issued September 17, 2020 paves the way for broad market participation of grid edge assets and systems in energy markets. Although its emphasis is on participation of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) in organized bulk power markets, it is expected to lead to development of local markets for both peer-to-peer and peer-to-market transactive exchanges. The Transactive Energy framework and Distributed Ledger Technology have both emerged as potential aligned facilitators for management of energy operations and finance in the emerging grid. Ideal design, architecture and performance characteristics such as DLT™s secure and persistent ledger capability combined with Transactive Energy system principles of management can enable peer-to-peer energy trading, utility scale grid transactions, energy financing and energy attribution, electric vehicle operations and EV ownership models which have the potential to transform the grid. This panel session will address the ramifications of FERC Order 2222 on grid-edge market participation, including Smart Buildings, Loads, and Customer Systems, as well as the related grid architectural implications. The panelists will discuss the emerging standards, emerging industry applications, and academic perspectives on DLT™s potential.
