This panel presents various topics related to power system protection challenges faced by electric power companies due to rapid increase in penetration levels of IBRs in the Distribution System. The following main topics will be presented: 1. Inverter-based resources perform differently than rotating machines during power system faults and dynamics. These differences are especially significant in microgrid systems where inverter-based resources can be dominant while islanded. The Power System Relaying and Control Committee™s recently published Technical Report addresses these challenges and solutions that have been successfully applied. IEEE P2030.12 is currently under development, building on this work.
