As new types of batteries reach commercial maturity and applications become more sophisticated, the requirements of integrating energy storage systems with the grid become more challenging. The panel will discuss battery management needs for different chemistry types (e.g., Li-ion, Flow batteries, Alkaline, and Lead-Acid batteries) and degradation mechanisms in the field. What are the current management solutions and their limitations? How to use machine-learning techniques to predict and prevent battery degradation during operations? What are the advantages of using hybrid DC systems to standardize the integration of different battery types? How to integrate Energy Management Systems, Power Conversion Systems controls, and Battery Management Systems to respond to utility signals and increase battery lifetime?
