Cross-border exchanges of energy are gaining significant attention from policy makers as these can be key to integrate massive amounts of renewables to power systems and thus decarbonize the energy sector in a cost-effective fashion. In this context, Latin America faces important challenges to create a functioning cross-border electricity market that can properly take advantage of the significant synergies among several power sources such as hydro, wind, solar, geothermal, biomass and natural gas. These challenges can also be observed in other large regions in the world like in Europe. This panel discusses the latest research and practical experiences on this topic around the world, with a particular focus on Latin America. Themes include business cases and cost-benefit analyses to justify increased levels of energy exchanges across large regions as well as discussions on implementation issues such as those associated with regulation, incentives and market design.
