Panel Session 06 Aug 2020

Power system planning faces a full spectrum of uncertainties ranging from supply side, demand side, to societal side. Increasing penetration of intermittent renewable energy resources, changing load pattern resulting from demand response and transportation electrification, and changing landscape in energy policies and regulations all play an important role in shaping the future power industry and subsequently contextualizing the needs for power system planning. The increased level of uncertainties creates challenges in the design, evaluation and selection process of planning, and calls for more robust solutions. The uncertainties also lead to technical challenges in the modeling and computation of the power systems, and require the exploration of new methodological, analytical and computational approaches. This panel will review the challenges, introduce best practices and discuss emerging solutions.
