Panel Session 06 Aug 2020

High quality of Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) data is vital for synchrophasor applications especially for possible real time wide area control. Synchrophasor system to support critical applications includes measurement devices, data concentrator, time synchronization and alignment, communication network and processing. The impact of anomalies in phasor calculation and associated synchrophasor data delivery systems on end-applications need to be analyzed and managed for best possible performance of the applications. Anomalies should be fixed, if possible or should be at least flagged to provide an opportunity for the applications to be ‘quality-aware’. Qualitative assessment of data anomalies and impact on applications will help in designing applications keeping the PMU data quality and other limitations in consideration. Implementation of “quality-aware” applications will drastically improve performance of and subsequently user confidence in synchrophasors applications. This panel will look at challenges and possible solutions in implementing quality-aware synchrophasors solutions at the control center.
