Panel Session 05 Aug 2020

Proliferation of Distributed Energy resources (DERs) and increasingly savvy prosumers are changing the way electric power systems have been operated for more than a century. Traditional electric utilities cannot continue business as usual under this changing paradigm. Prosumers (owners of DER assets, Building Energy Management System operators, microgrid operators, Community Choice Aggregators, etc.) are demanding to exercise freedom for peer-to-peer transactions to maximize value of their DER investments. From the distribution system operator’s perspective, customer-side active generation (DERs) not only result in reduced bottom line for the utilities but also increase real and reactive power balancing costs to maintain distribution system within acceptable operational limits. A well designed Transactive Energy System (TES) can pave the way for an ecosystem wherein smart buildings, loads, and customer systems can engage in transactive exchanges among each other as well as exchanges with grid operators based on value maximization incentives.
This panel session will discuss transactive market design and operational solutions with a view to win-win opportunities for prosumers and grid operators. The panel will include discussion of Transactive Distributed Energy Resources Management platforms, including efficient data communication, information security, and big data analytics. Illustrative examples and use cases will be presented including buildings, loads, campuses, microgrids, and combinations thereof acting as transactive agents and/or transactive hubs.
