The electric power grid is vulnerable to disturbances caused by cyberattacks and extreme weather events. Both the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events have significantly increased in recent years. Similarly, malicious attacks, especially with numerous cyberattacks on vulnerable field devices and behind-the-meter resources, can potentially disrupt distribution grid operations. The reliability, security, and resilience of the electric grid is an increasingly high-priority topic in the United States. While the operational considerations for bulk power grid during unexpected events have received significant attention, similar emerging operational challenges for distribution networks requires further attention. The electric utilities in the U.S. are facing a variety of new challenges and looking for grid modernization solutions to provide reliable, resilient, and secure electricity service for their customers. Solving these emerging challenges requires coordination among different players working in this domain, including utilities, vendors, and researchers.
This panel will discuss the roles of DMS/ADMS and its coordination with other utility management systems (such as outage management system, microgrid management system) on dealing with unexpected events and mitigating abnormal grid operations. Specifically, this panel will gather speakers from utilities, vendors, academia, and national lab, and will provide insightful presentations for the following two topics:
• Utility practice in using DMS/ADMS to handle events and improve grid operations
• State-of-the-art technologies relying on DMS/ADMS to bridge the gap and enhance grid resilience and security
