The power generated from the wind and solar presents highly variable and fluctuating characteristics at different time scales. In the short-term time scale, the variable wind and solar power generation would cause frequency fluctuation of the grid; from the long-term time scale, the variable power generated from the wind and solar would result in challenges for energy management of either the day-ahead or the real-time electricity market. This panel presents industry experience and academic research of intermittent wind and solar power generation characteristics and how an energy storage system can be designed to overcome the variable power generation challenges. This includes the use of battery storage, hydraulic storage, inertia storage, virtual storage, etc. to enhance grid reliability and resilience at different time scales.
