Data is becoming more and more important for power and energy systems operation and planning. Although the power and energy community is fully aware of the intrinsic value of those data, the methods to deal with it still require significant improvements and research. The interest of the power industry in data mining techniques is, however, relatively recent. The lack of good quality datasets publicly accessible is a barrier felt by the people working in the area. Research, development, and innovation in these fields require the availability of datasets that should be as realistic as possible. Datasets based on data measured in existing installations and systems is especially important. This panel addresses the use of open data sets in the power and energy domain, for the experimentation, development, and analysis of intelligent techniques and applications. Moreover, the panel focus on the difficulties of data acquisition, organization, storage, and preparation and on pioneering approaches to overcome those difficulties.
