This panel session will discuss various aspects in applying synchronized measurement such as synchrophasors to enhance the grid resiliency. With power systems around the world fast moving towards a low or zero carbon electric energy supply future, the grid operation is facing new challenges in keeping the grid resilient to major disturbances and extreme contingencies. The system has become more dynamic with reduced inertia, lower short circuit current, and highly intermittent and fast changing generation resources. When measurements taken across a wide area at a high data rate and synchronized time points, it enables protection and control systems and schemes to take well-coordinated and highly intelligent protection and control actions without human interaction. This panel will review and discuss industry experience thus far in adopting synchronized measurements for protection and controls, considerations in deploying synchrophasor-based protection and control systems and schemes, and practical examples of such applications at leading utilities.
