Driven by grid transformation toward decentralization, decarbonization, and digitalization, innovative smart grid technologies have been emerged in the recent decade, including those that harness the power of big data and IoT. Enabling such disruptive technologies requires enlarging
the domain of electric power systems expertise, leading to multi-disciplinary careers for power systems engineers. In view of these, several startups are initiated within the last few years, addressing challenges of modern smart grids using cutting-edge solutions and creating a demand for a novel set of multi-disciplinary expertise. In this context, power and energy systems researchers play a crucial role in bridging the gap between academia and industry. The panel will address opportunities and challenges of emerging careers for modern grids. Discussions include disruptive technology trends, suggestions on preparing a career for modern grids, and how to bridge the gap between academic ideas and successful commercial solutions. Panelists will share their experiences, providing a vision for a multitude of paths leading to career success. The target audience is composed of junior faculty, post-doctoral scholars, graduate students, entrepreneurs, and anyone onsidering pursuing a multi-disciplinary career.
