Electric systems across the world are experiencing unprecedented changes in their generation fleet. These changes are being driven partly by regulation and in many other cases by economics. Legacy thermal generation is fast being replaced by renewable resources, mostly wind and solar generation. This evolving generation fleet poses significant operational challenges such as system operating flexibility, outage management, availability of reserves, and congestion management to note a few. As the penetration levels continue to grow, it is expected that significant upgrades will be required to be made to the transmission infrastructure to reliably & efficiently accommodate these resources.
This panel will focus on three main aspects of transmission system development for accommodating bulk quantities of renewable generation:
1) System studies, methodologies and tools for identification of efficient transmission solutions
2) Project experience in construction of large transmission facilities, including HVDC
3) Regulatory requirements and challenges in ensuring timely development
