Panel Session 06 Aug 2019

In modern power grids there is already a significant penetration of renewable energy sources installed at both transmission and distribution systems. The degree of penetration is likely to grow much higher in the future. The response of inverter interfaced or controlled generation to faults is significantly different compared to that of conventional rotating machines. The integration of large amounts of distributed generation to distribution systems causes bidirectional power flows making conventional distribution systems protection schemes ineffective. In this panel, experts in power systems protection will discuss the research challenges and some potential state-of-the-art solutions for protecting power transmission and distribution systems with massive amounts of renewable energy.
