The utility information systems of today, such as SCADA, SCADA/EMS, SCADA/DMS and SAS, are predicated on the same networking concepts and deploy the same types of servers and workstations as the information systems from any other industry. This induces us to ask whether the current IT paradigms such as server virtualization and cloud computing can be used in power system control center environ- ments. If ?yes?, the next question is to what extent such technologies have already been deployed in control centers and with what results and benefits. Accordingly, the objectives of the Modern Information Technologies in the Computerized Operation of Power Systems panel are to shade light on these topics and to identify other platform trends that might be worth pursuing. The invited panelists will address topics: implementation of virtualization technologies in SCADA/EMS/DMS systems; potential for using cloud computing techniques in a utility information system.
