SMART GRID INNOVATION IN AN INTEGRATED UTILITY FRAMEWORK

Since the mid-nineties, the utility industry has been subjected to large-scale deregulation. In many cases, this has resulted in complete dismantling of the legacy Production-Transmission-Distribution utility. In cases where a dominant utility survived, it has been separated in functional business units confined in silos that can only communicate through well-defined regulatory channels.
This panel will explore how Hydro Quebec, as an integrated utility, has responded to these changes and is transforming its business through smart grid technologies deployed across functional silos. Several technologies under implementation will be addressed from Transmission to Distribution and End-Use. Topics will range from PMU based wide-Area Situational Awareness to Response-based Special Protection Schemes, Smart Building with grid services capabilities, Transactive DER integration and Utility microgrids to enhance distribution networks resiliency.
